Job Description

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Design & Engineering Services, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex position located in Juneau to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information
  • Engineering Assistant 1 – $34.42/hr (OT Eligible)
  • Engineering Assistant 2 – $39.67/hr (OT Eligible)
  • Engineering Assistant 3 – $45.35/hr (OT Eligible)
Responsibilities

Engineering Assistant 1: Under direct and often detailed supervision perform entry‑level engineering tasks for capital improvement projects and field reconnaissance data acquisition. Tasks include assisting in the development of preliminary reconnaissance work for road/airport/marine projects, field data acquisition, and final production of project plans, specifications, estimates and other engineering documents.

Engineering Assistant 2: Under supervision perform design engineering duties for capital improvement projects and field reconnaissance data acquisition. Tasks include assisting in the development of preliminary reconnaissance work for road/airport/marine projects, field data acquisition, and final production of project plans, specifications, estimates and other engineering documents.

Engineering Assistant 3: Under general direction perform preliminary engineering and field reconnaissance as well as journey‑level design engineering duties. Tasks include field reconnaissance, research, development, and final production of project plans, specifications, estimates, and other engineering documents. Typically performs field reconnaissance independently and leads mid‑level projects.

Minimum Qualifications Engineering Assistant 1

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET, or a Bachelor’s degree from a non‑ABET institution and an Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (or verification of passing FE/FS). An applicant who will obtain a bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited institution within nine months will qualify for conditional offer.

Assistant 2

Either:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET accredited institution, and at least one year of entry‑level engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a non‑ABET institution, and an EIT or LSIT certificate (or FE/FS), and at least one year of entry‑level engineering experience as an Assistant 1.
  • Five years of progressively responsible sub‑professional engineering experience including at least two years as a Journey‑level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
Graduate study may be substituted (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

Engineering Assistant 3

Either:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET accredited institution, and two years of experience at the working or intermediate trainee level (including at least one year as an Assistant
