Position: Bridge Drafting / Geo-Spatial Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex

Base Salary Information

  • Engineering Assistant 1: $35.45 / hour (OT eligible)
  • Engineering Assistant 2: $40.86 / hour (OT eligible)
  • Engineering Assistant 3: $46.71 / hour (OT eligible)
What you will be doing

The Bridge Drafting and Geo‑Spatial Engineering Assistant plays a hands‑on role in the drafting of bridge design projects and processing of information collected during bridge inspections. You will prepare construction plan sheets, conduct bridge inspections, and assist with collection and processing of bridge management data. Under the guidance of licensed engineers, you will prepare preliminary bridge layouts and detailed final plans using AutoCAD and assist with drone and sonar data collection efforts.

Your work will directly contribute to the safety and improvement of the State of Alaska’s infrastructure.

This position is located at DOT&PF Headquarters in Juneau, at the 3‑mile building on Channel Drive. The office environment is casual‑professional, team‑oriented, and friendly. Bridge inspection assignments can involve travel to all regions of Alaska, including remote sites reached by aircraft, float planes, and other transportation means. The area is a temperate rain forest with steep‑sided mountains, glaciers, and fjords, offering abundant outdoor recreational opportunities.

To be successful, the selected candidate will possess the following core competencies:

  • Design
    :
    Knowledge of conceptualizing, developing, producing, and using plans, models, blueprints, and maps, and tools to produce precision technical drawings.
  • Structural Engineering
    :
    Knowledge of principles, theories, and methods for designing and analyzing complex structures.
  • Analysis and Assessment
    :
    Use of IT to access, collect, analyze, and disseminate data.
  • Civil Engineering
    :
    Knowledge of planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining facilities such as transportation systems and water/sanitary systems.
  • Database Management Systems
    :
    Knowledge of database systems and software for managing data integrity and security.
Special Note
  • This position requires field work that includes traversing uneven terrain and ascending/descending bridge embankments and riverbanks.
  • It is preferred, but not essential, that the applicant possess a valid driver’s license.
