Position: Bridge Drafting / Geo-Spatial Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex (PCN 250212)

What You Will Be Doing

The Bridge Drafting and Geo‑Spatial Engineering Assistant will assist in the drafting and design of bridge projects, process data collected during inspections, and support the overall bridge management program. The role includes

  • Preparing construction plan sheets and detailed final plans using AutoCAD
  • Conducting bridge inspections and collecting bridge‑management data
  • Assisting with drone and sonar data collection and processing
  • Generating preliminary bridge layouts under the guidance of licensed engineers
  • Supporting GIS and database work related to bridge infrastructure
Core Competencies
  • Design – creating, reviewing, and using engineering drawings and maps
  • Structural Engineering – applying principles for complex structural analysis
  • Analysis and Assessment – using IT tools to collect, analyze, and disseminate data
  • Civil Engineering – planning, designing, and maintaining transportation and public works facilities
  • Database Management Systems – managing secure, accurate data repositories
Special Note
  • The position involves field work on uneven terrain and bridge embankments; a valid driver’s license is preferred but not required.
Minimum Qualifications Engineering Assistant 1
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
  • OR a non‑ABET bachelor’s degree AND an Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) certificate, or verification of FE or FS exam results.
  • Completing the degree requirement within nine months of application qualifies for a conditional offer.
  • Engineering‑In‑Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/2 positions will be identified by the employing department.
Engineering Assistant 2
  • Bachelor’s degree (ABET‑accredited) in engineering, architecture, or land surveying.
  • One year of entry‑level engineering, architectural, or land‑surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere.
  • OR a non‑ABET bachelor’s degree, EIT/LSIT certificate or FE/FS verification, plus the required experience.
  • OR five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience, with at least two years as a Journey‑level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska or equivalent.
  • Graduate study may be substituted for required experience (two semesters equals one month).
Engineering Assistant 3
  • Bachelor’s degree (ABET‑accredited) in engineering, architecture, or land surveying.
  • Two years of experience at the working or intermediate trainee level; one year must be as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere.
  • OR a non‑ABET bachelor’s degree, EIT certificate or FE verification, and the required experience.
  • Four years of ABET‑accredited education and/or engineering experience may substitute for the required degree.
  • Graduate study may substitute for the required experience (two semesters equals one month).
