Engineering Assistant 2: $39.67 Hourly (OT Eligible)
What you will be doing:Engineering Assistant 1
Under the immediate supervision of a Project Manager (Engineer Architect 1/2/3) and Project Engineer (Engineering Assistant 2 or
3), the Engineering Assistant 1 will perform a variety of entry/trainee level professional engineering duties on Capital Improvement Construction Projects in the Alaska DOT&PF Southcoast Region. The main purpose of the Engineering Assistant 1 position is training and development towards becoming a Project Engineer through experience on Construction Projects. The Project Engineer is the Department’s representative responsible for onsite administration of construction projects.
Within the first twelve months as an Engineering Assistant 1 the position will have worked on at least one active construction project and be able to demonstrate competence in the primary work activities as outlined in the training plan and will have developed the knowledge, skills, and abilities for advancement to Engineering Assistant
2. Primary work activities may consist of Construction Inspection, Documentation of Contractor Work, Measurement of Completed Work, Quality Assurance for Plan and Specification Conformance, Testing of Construction Materials, and Contract Closeout.
May be assigned as Assistant Project Engineer on Large Complex Projects or as Project Engineer on Small-to-Medium Complexity Projects. On Large Complex Project the Engineering Assistant 2 will operate under the general supervision of the Project Engineer as Assistant Project Engineer. This position assists in administering construction projects in compliance with the Alaska Construction Manual, contract requirements, and departmental policies. Responsibilities include overseeing specific construction activities or work shifts, supervising and training staff, performing inspection duties, certifying work for payment, and representing the Department in project-related communications.
On small-to-medium complexity projects, the Engineering Assistant 2 may be the Project Engineer overseeing construction projects, ensuring compliance with the Alaska DOT&PF Construction Manual, the Construction Contract, and DOT&PF policies while coordinating engineering activities and inspection. They manage and train subordinates, perform inspections when needed, and serve as the Department’s representative in interactions with contractors, property owners, and the public.
Duties:
- Work in coastal communities;
Assignments can require transportation by or operating small boats or ATVs. - Some projects are accessible only by charter boat or float plane as weather permits.
- Work on location from the start of construction through project completion.
- Projects may require working split, swing, grave shifts, or overtime.
- Work outdoors and in the office.
- Assignments can require being physically at the site of work, exposed to the elements, for the duration of the work shift.
