The Assessor’s Office within the Department of Finance is hiring an Appraiser I or Appraiser II to join our Finance team!

The City & Borough of Juneau Assessor’s Office is looking for someone who is eager to learn and bring their existing skills into a new field.

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications. If hired at the lower level, the successful applicant will be promoted to the higher level upon meeting the minimum qualifications for the higher level, completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work as determined by the supervisor.

You don’t need prior appraisal experience to get started. This position is a great fit for someone who meets the basic requirements and brings transferable skills from other work such as construction, real estate, property records, office administration, or customer service. If you have experience reviewing documents, working with the public, paying close attention to details, and using basic computer systems, you may already have the foundation needed to succeed in this role.

The Assessor’s Office is a strong team that works to value property equitably throughout the Borough. We work in office as well as in the field gathering and analyzing information to determine assessed valuations. Training and development are important, and you will be expected to attend (in person and virtual) courses and complete certifications in the profession of property assessment.

The Assessor’s Office is a busy office working directly with residents, businesses, tourists and other members of the public with questions about Juneau! The Assessor and team are actively working to improve processes and streamline workflows as well as serve our Juneau Community fairly and effectively.

Working Hours and Location

This position works 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau at 1208 Glacier Ave.

This is a ‘Flex’ position meaning we can hire at the Appraiser I level with the expectation that the candidate will achieve the required training and certification to work at the Appraiser II level, or an experienced candidate may be hired at the Appraiser II level.

Appraiser I Responsibilities

This is the entry/trainee professional level working under the general supervision of a higher-level appraiser. Supervisors define the work assignments, regularly monitor work progress and provide specific instruction and feedback. Work is intended to familiarize employees with the policies and procedures of the department and requires the application of basic principles of property appraisal in an on-the-job environment. Incumbents receive on-the-job and formal training for a period of one to two years.

Typical responsibilities include the following: (as the incumbent becomes familiar with the principals, methods, and techniques used, the following duties will be assumed under supervision):

  • Assists the Appraiser II’s with field inspections.
  • Performs on‑site inspections of residential and commercial property, including new construction, to obtain property market information and valuing the parcel at its full market value as of January 1st every year.
