Job Overview
Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection –
Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 2 – Glennallen, Alaska. This seasonal position is open to Alaska residents only. Residents must meet the department’s residency definition.
- Provide initial attack wildfire suppression during the 6‑9 month season.
- Support out‑of‑state fire assignments and perform additional fuels mitigation work during and outside of fire season.
- Work with federal, state, and local emergency response agencies and private industry vendors to protect life, property, and natural resources.
- Maintain readiness, equipment, and training for rapid response.

Working EnvironmentBase operations located in the Valdez/Copper River Area with extensive field travel across the protection zone. Work demands include remote, primitive locations, long hours (often over 16 hrs/day), and frequent helicopter and small aircraft use.

- Six months of trainee or entry‑level wildland fire or forestry field experience. This may be satisfied by service as a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 1 with the State of Alaska or an equivalent position.
- Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System.
Coursework from an accredited college or vocational technical school in forestry, fire science, or a closely related field may substitute for the six‑month field experience requirement. Equivalent credits: 3 semester hours = 1 month of experience, 4 quarter hours = 1 month.
Special Note- Applicants must be at least eighteen years of age.
- National Incident Qualification System certification is required; specialties include fire operations, wildland fire prevention, or aviation support.
- Must pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level (3‑mile hike carrying a 45‑lb pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less).
- Must possess an Alaska driver’s license (conditional offer possible for applicants who will acquire one before start).
- Positions may require travel within Alaska and to the Lower 48 States up to 21 days, stand‑by status, and handling hazardous materials.
- Some positions may require a commercial driver’s license with endorsements.
- Master record and/or current Incident Qualification Card (Red Card).
- Other documents as specifically requested in the application.
