THE JOB:
You will be part of a team of people who work to ensure law enforcement cases are processed effectively. This position provides customer service to the public at the front counter and by phone, answering a wide and interesting variety of questions. In addition, it supports Juneau Police Department operations through document processing, releasing reports, and FBI Uniform Crime Reporting.
This position works regular business hours and does not typically require shift work.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
A friendly, patient, and observant person who can balance customer service, data maintenance, and record processing. It is important to have the interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a diverse range of customers. The ideal candidate maintains the strictest confidence while handling sensitive documents and information.
WORK HOURS:
The Records Unit provides essential support to operational units of the police department and staffs the public-facing front window of the police department Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM excluding observed holidays.
LOCATION:
Records Technicians work within the Records Unit on the first floor of the police department on Alaway Avenue in the Lemon Creek area, conveniently located between downtown and the valley.

In this position, you will be responsible for both clerical and technical work, such as data entry, filing, answering phones, providing customer service, conducting routine and complex red actions of information in documents, audio and video files, releasing information to the public, justice partners, and private companies. This position will learn to perform coding and classification of crime data in the JPD Records Management System which is then submitted to the State and Federal government via the National Incident Based Reporting System.
Records work involves systematic receipt, storage, release, disposal, and security of all documentation related to police records. You will play a vital role in helping to maintain the integrity of all records with established standards, policies, procedures, and departmental guidelines.
Education:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Experience:
Six (6) months of work experience in a law enforcement office or clerical work using specialized databases or processing legal documents.
License:
Valid Alaska Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
APSIN
This position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN).
A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
BACKGROUND CHECK
As part of the selection process, applicants are subject to a background investigation pursuant to AS 12.62 and 13 AAC 68.215 that includes a criminal background review, fingerprinting*, investigative review, psychological exam, and receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances (this includes: new hires, short term temp, long term temp, transfers from another CBJ department, or former JPD employees who have been separated from JPD employment for more than 30 days).
