Qualifications & Experience

We’re searching for someone who brings a mix of real‑world experience, solid communication skills, and a passion for learning. If some of these sound like you, we want to hear from you!

  • Understanding the unique challenges and strengths of rural communities.
  • Knowing how to meet people where they are and offer real support that makes a difference.
  • Experience leading workshops or training sessions for adults, face‑to‑face or remotely (e.g., Zoom, MS Teams).
  • Expressed confidence explaining rules, policies, or regulations clearly to community members, coworkers, or government officials, both written and spoken.
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience with accounting software (Quick Books or Quicken) and ability to interpret budgets or financial statements, especially in a government or nonprofit setting.
Minimum Qualifications

Local Government Specialist 1 (Range 13)

  • Any combination of education and/or experience that provides competencies in administration and management, analytical thinking/problem solving, oral and written communication, public service motivation, and reading comprehension.
  • Equivalent experience typically gained by post‑secondary education or experience in accounting, budget administration, financial services, social services, public administration, legal or paralegal services, grant development, or providing administrative support.

Local Government Specialist 2 (Range 15)

  • Completion of the Local Government Specialist Flex 1 Training Plan or equivalent experience providing competencies in analytical thinking/problem solving, oral and written communication, public service motivation, and reading comprehension.
  • Equivalent experience typically gained by the same fields as above.

Local Government Specialist 3 (Range 17)

  • Completion of the Local Government Specialist Flex 2 Training Plan or equivalent experience providing competencies in advocacy, self‑management, teaching others, and technical competence.
  • Equivalent experience typically gained by the same fields as above.

“Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation. “Typically gained by” refers to the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.

Cover Letter

Provide a cover letter detailing your experience teaching adults and/or writing or proofreading technical documents, municipal or tribal documents, or financial documents.

Interview Process

Interviews may be conducted in person or via Zoom and will include a written exercise scored up to 20 points: 5 points for following instructions, 5 for written skills, 5 for editing/proofreading skills, and 5 for content.

At the time of interview, provide:

  • Three references with current contact information, two of which must be former supervisors.
  • Last three performance evaluations (if available).
