Patrol officers work 12‑hour shifts that rotate between day and night on a quarterly basis, responding to calls throughout the City & Borough of Juneau with the department headquartered in Lemon Creek. Officers may laterally transfer to units such as Criminal Investigations, Drug Unit, School Resource Officer, Airport Officer, Downtown Officer, and specialty units like SWAT, Crisis Negotiation Team, and Firearms Instructor.

• Conduct patrols on foot, bicycle, or in a police car to observe activities on streets, businesses, residential areas, and public spaces, using discretion to take enforcement actions or initiate peace‑keeping measures.
• Operate police vehicles, observe the public, investigate accidents, determine violations of applicable laws, issue citations, and enforce federal, state, and local laws and city ordinances.
• Takes charge of situations requiring law‑enforcement involvement—including car accidents, emergencies, and public disturbances—assessing the situation, determining immediate response, administering first aid, directing traffic, and requesting emergency assistance.
• Responds to calls for service or conducts self‑initiated investigations of civil and criminal complaints; evaluates whether the law was violated and takes appropriate action.
• Questions witnesses, obtains statements, collects and preserves evidence, prepares criminal and civil complaints, serves process papers, and conducts citations.
• Refers victims to appropriate agencies such as Family and Youth Services, medical authorities, or domestic‑violence programs.
• Uses specialized police equipment—cameras, radar, blood‑alcohol testing instruments, radios, less lethal and deadly weapons—properly and safely.
• Apprehends, pursues, restrains, and detains suspects; makes arrests and transports prisoners.
• Testifies in court in both civil and criminal cases.
• Prepares reports on investigations, activities, and conditions that may endanger the public.
• Assists other law‑enforcement agencies as needed.
• Completes special duty assignments such as public speaking, search and rescue operations, educational programs, and special training sessions.
• Performs other related duties as required.

• Education: High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
• Other: Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. National; at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment; possess or obtain a valid Alaska Driver's License by date of appointment and for continued employment.

• 5 points for Police Officers with 2 or more years of experience.
• 10 points for Police Officers with 2 or more years of experience and an Alaska Police Standards Council Police Officer Certificate.

Applicants are subject to a background investigation that includes a criminal background review, fingerprinting, investigative review, and polygraph examination. Misrepresentation of information will result in exclusion from consideration or dismissal if already employed.

Appointment is conditional upon successful completion of all background, medical, psychological, and controlled‑substance testing. Standards applied will meet or exceed the Basic Standards for Police Officers (13 AAC 85).
