WorkingHours and Location
This position typically works a 7.5‑hour day (Monday through Friday). Your shift beginning and finish times will be determined at the time of appointment but your shift will begin between 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. and your finish time will match accordingly between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Your office is located at 11305 Glacier Highway, near Statter Harbor in Auke Bay.
Responsibilities- Monitor the City’s network environment to maintain awareness of operational status, including outages or slowdowns. Track usage trends, establish performance baselines, and use that data to proactively identify and address bottlenecks, inefficiencies, or vulnerabilities. Provide regular reports to IT management on network performance and potential risks.
- Ensure the network infrastructure supports City operations reliably and cost‑effectively. Recommend upgrades or replacements for aging technology, plan LAN/WAN improvements based on usage trends, and identify and reduce single points of failure.
- Administer and maintain key network services such as DNS, routing, firewalls, and VPN access. Monitor performance and quickly troubleshoot and resolve service disruptions.
- Serve as a subject‑matter expert for the City’s email system, supporting server maintenance, mailbox management, email security, and troubleshooting delivery issues. Assist with eDiscovery requests for public information and legal records.
- Support Active Directory operations, including maintaining domain controllers, managing user objects, and developing and maintaining Group Policy Objects while resolving policy conflicts.
- Maintain network security by monitoring infrastructure security requirements and supporting compliance needs such as CJIS, TSA, USCG, and HIPAA where applicable.
- Install and maintain point‑to‑point microwave radios used for communications infrastructure, maintain equipment configurations, and ensure proper licensing coordination.
- Research new technologies, develop network design recommendations, and assist with help‑desk requests related to email, networking, or specialized applications when needed.
Two (2) years of experience in information systems maintenance or support which includes the maintenance of network systems.
SubstitutionBachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Computer Information Systems or related field will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience. Graduate study in computer science may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience on the basis of two (2) semester hours (3 quarter hours) for each month of experience.
Requirements- A current Driver’s License at the time of appointment and for continued employment.
- A tower climbing certificate. Training is provided by CBJ and will be renewed biennially.
- Background check that will include fingerprinting and a criminal background review. Depending on task assignments, a credit check may also be required. All information provided will be verified. Applicants who materially misrepresent any information will be excluded from consideration or dismissed if already employed.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the time of hire. The City and Borough of Juneau does not provide employment‑based visa sponsorship for this position.
