ATTENTION ALASKA RESIDENTS!Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Highways and Aviation Tok District is looking for a Seasonal Full-Time Equipment Operator Sub Journey 2 / Journey 1 in South Fork to help us Keep Alaska Moving!
SALARY INFORMATION- Equipment Operator Sub Journey 2 – $26.26/Hour
- Equipment Operator Journey 1 – $30.20/Hour
- Shared Duties (Both SJ2 & J1):
- Perform year‑round maintenance of state highways, including snow and ice removal, asphalt/gravel patching, and drainage structure upkeep.
- Operate and service a variety of equipment including plow trucks, loaders, rollers, sweepers, water trucks, and other small tools.
- Conduct traffic control and flagging operations.
- Maintain roadside features such as signs, guardrails, fences, and vegetation.
- Perform general vehicle maintenance, minor repairs, welding/fabrication, and shop cleanup.
- Use state radio communications for direction and coordination of field work.
- Participate in manual labor tasks including brush cutting, litter control, and hand patching.
- Key Differences Between SJ2 and J1
- SJ2 is an entry‑level/apprentice position; J1 is a fully qualified journey‑level role.
- SJ2 operates under close supervision and is trained on equipment to prepare for advancement; J1 works independently and performs all duties without oversight.
- SJ2 can obtain a CDL after hire; J1 must have a Class A CDL at the time of hire.
- SJ2 does not lead crews; J1 may serve as lead and enter data into the Maintenance Management System (MMS).
- SJ2 promotes to J1 (WG 54) after one year and successful testing.

This is a seasonal full‑time position located in South Fork, Alaska, within the Tok District. Expect a dynamic, fast‑paced environment with varied responsibilities and conditions. You’ll work independently and as part of a team, often in challenging weather or terrain. Shift work and emergency responses are part of the role, and safety is a priority. Our supportive team and ongoing training ensure you have the tools to succeed in any situation.
