Job Summary:

As the Community Outreach Intern, you will work with Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition staff and community-based tribal stewardship crews to develop communication plans and products to share the crews' work and successes within their home communities. We anticipate the work will occur in up to three of these communities (Yakutat, Hoonah, Angoon, Kake, Klawock and/or Ketchikan). The intern will travel to the communities and join local staff in the field, learn about watershed stewardship projects, document the work done, and collaborate with staff to decide what and how best to communicate with their wider communities.

The intern will have flexibility to explore different engagement approaches (social media, radio, in-person events, etc.) and identify one or more outlets to pursue for each community.
Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition consists of a small (7) team of restoration practitioners and scientists who are dedicated to community-based watershed stewardship in southeast Alaska. They work with a variety of partners across the region to assess, prioritize, implement, and monitor efforts to restore forest and stream habitat.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Coordinate with SAWC team and partners to understand outreach goals and efforts
• Travel across Southeast Alaska to meet with tribal stewardship crews
• Document field work being done in various communities
• Clearly identify target audiences and develop effective outreach methods tailored to each
• Gain knowledge and confidence to integrate science, stewardship, and community into communication products
• Use creative approaches to develop outreach materials beyond social media
Possible Projects/Deliverables:
• Identify and implement community engagement plans for internal and partner use
• Create outreach materials such as handouts, videos, social media for immediate or future use by partners
• Help plan and lead a community outreach event
Required Skills/Abilities:
• Self-motivated and takes initiative to reach out and connect with people.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Willing to travel to small, remote communities in southeast Alaska (e.g. on small prop planes and ferries, with limited cell signal, chance of being stranded by weather).
• Willing and able to spend time in the field (e.g. navigating uneven forest floor, wading streams) in inclement weather with watershed stewardship work forces.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Valid driver's license

Education and Experience:

• Must be 18 years old at time of hire
• Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)
• Legally authorized to work in the United States
Preferred:
• Major or minor in communications, public relations, journalism, or similar
• Junior, senior, or recent graduate
• Experience developing outreach messaging, materials, and approaches beyond social media for targeted audiences.
• Photography and/or videography skills
• Familiarity with GIS communication tools (e.g., Story Maps, ArcGIS, or similar)
