Job Description

The Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API) is recruiting for a Psychiatric Nurse 1/2.

What You Will Be Doing

As a Psychiatric Nurse 1/2 you will be providing skilled nursing care to patients; conducting individualized patient assessments and care; participating in therapeutic activities as facilitator or co‑facilitator. You will administer medications and provide education on expected outcomes, possible side effects, and food/drug interactions. You will transcribe all orders, recording this information in each patient’s Medication Administration Record (MAR) and chart regarding patient behavior and responses to medication treatment.

The role requires complete nursing assessments on newly admitted patients, patients on close observation special status, or patients that may require emergency seclusion or restraint. You will also determine and prioritize individual nursing needs, give direction to Office Assistant 1s and Psychiatric Nursing Assistants 1/2/3, and monitor those assignments for both completion and accuracy.

Working Environment You Can Expect

The selected candidate will work in an environment that is fast‑paced, busy and challenging at times, but embraces collaboration through working closely with supervisors, managers, and personnel to assist in providing services to Alaska Psychiatric Institute. The position is located at 3700 Piper Street in the U‑MED district of east Anchorage which offers several maintained walking trails, parks and nearby lakes.

This area is filled with several restaurants, shopping stores, and has easy access to public transportation.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a candidate with the following competencies:

  • Experience working with mentally ill or developmentally disabled individuals is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as a team member, with good judgment.
  • Ability to apply discretion in handling confidential information and situations, while exercising a high degree of tact, discretion, and sound judgment in the performance of the work.
  • Possess good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and productively manage time to ensure compliance with numerous deadlines while working effectively under pressure with continual interruption, reorganizing priorities in a dynamic, frequently changing work environment.
  • Above average communication skills with the ability to convey information courteously, accurately, and effectively.
Minimum Qualifications Psychiatric Nurse 1

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.

Psychiatric Nurse 2

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska; AND EITHER successful completion of a formal training plan as a Psychiatric Nurse 1 with the State of Alaska OR one year of entry‑level experience as a Registered Nurse. Examples of this experience include but are not exclusively limited to prior service as a Psychiatric Nurse 1, Corrections Nurse 1, or Nurse 1 with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.

Substitution

Combinations of prior training and experience in other specializations of nursing care (e.g., Med‑Surg, Corrections, Public Health, Critical Care) will be evaluated for comparability on a case‑by‑case basis.
