Overview
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, is recruiting for a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 4 in McGrath. This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please review the residency definition to determine qualification.
What You Will Be DoingThis position will serve as a crew member on a wildland firefighting crew assigned to an exclusive-use helicopter. Selected candidates will also be assigned to fuels reduction activities, including removing timber, clearing brush, piling vegetation, burning vegetation piles, maintaining project-related equipment, and documenting daily activities. The position is expected to respond to both initial attack and extended attack wildfire incidents as a Wildland Firefighter.

The Working Environment You Can ExpectThe duty station is McGrath, Alaska, a remote community located on the upper reaches of the Kuskokwim River. Housing is provided with communal bathroom, laundry, and dining facilities. McGrath is accessible only by air and boat, with a small population and limited services.

Twelve months of wildland firefighting or forestry field experience at the journey level. The required journey level experience is met by service as a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer. Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System (NIMS) is required.
Substitution:
Completed coursework from an accredited college or vocational technical school in forestry, fire science, or a closely related field may substitute for up to six months of required field experience. College credits are evaluated per guidance provided in the posting.
There is no substitution for the National Incident Qualification System (Red Card) qualifications.
Special Notes & RequirementsApplicants must be at least eighteen years of age. Most positions require National Incident Qualification System certifications. Recruitment and selection will consider experience and NIMS training in fire operations, wildland fire prevention, and aviation support.
Applicants must be able to pass the Work Capacity Test at the “Arduous” level. The test requires completing a 3-mile hike with a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes or less. An Alaska driver’s license is required; some positions may require a commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements. Travel in-state and out-of-state for assignments may be required, with potential for 14 to 21 day away assignments;
some duties involve flying in small aircraft or helicopters and handling hazardous materials.
Positions may require travel, stand-by, or recall status during fire season.
