Position: Seasonal Park Ranger (Interpretation)

Overview

Seasonal Park Ranger (Interpretation) — Denali National Park and Preserve, Denali, AK. This is an open continuous announcement with an initial cut-off date of February 13, 2026. The position has an exception to the typical 1039-hour season, allowing up to 1560 hours. Applicants are encouraged to apply by the initial cut-off date. Salary: $22.07 to $28.69 per hour. An additional 3% cost of living allowance (COLA) will be added. Pay is subject to annual review. Pay scale & grade GS 5.

Duties
  • Interpretation:
    Develop and present formal and informal interpretive programs (walks, ranger talks, bus messages, campground programs). Prepare written outlines. Proficient with PC equipment and software (PowerPoint, MS Word, scanners, printers, etc.).
  • Visitor Services:
    Provide front desk support, respond to inquiries, process sales, and collect fees. Maintain brochures and audio-visual equipment. May perform front desk duties, respond to inquiries, and assist with administrative tasks. May support statistical recording, flyer development, and inventory management. May provide first aid as needed.
  • Resource Protection:
    Conduct on-foot patrols to interpret and protect resources. Inform visitors of park regulations and safety, and manage human-wildlife interactions to ensure safety and resource protection.
Responsibilities (additional context)

The National Park Service aims to connect people to parks and promote stewardship and education through interpretive and educational programs. Park ranger–interpreters engage the public to help visitors connect with park meanings and values and support resource preservation for current and future generations.

Requirements and Qualifications

Requirements
Conditions of employment U.S. Citizenship required. Background investigation and favorable adjudication. Selective Service registration for males. Direct Deposit enrollment. May be required to operate government or private vehicles; valid driver’s license and driving record required. Uniforms are required with a uniform allowance. On-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required. Fee collection duties may apply. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date 06/01/2026 unless stated otherwise.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park’s resources, and local knowledge of area resources and conditions applicable to duties.

  • Residency eligibility:
    Your resume must show periods of time living or working in or near the area of consideration. Areas considered “near” include Denali National Park and Preserve, Toklat, and Wonder Lake duty stations (e.g., Anderson, Cantwell, Chulitna, Clear, Curry, Denali Park, Healy, Kantishna, Lake Minchumina, Nenana, Nikolai, Petersville, Talkeetna, Tanana, Telida, Trapper Creek).
  • Competencies:

    Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; ability to research, develop, and present interpretive programs; strong customer service; experience operating a busy visitor center or similar facility; proficiency with computers and office equipment.
  • Education:

    No substitution of education for required park resource knowledge and expertise.

Additional information

OPM has approved an exception to the 1039-hour time limitation for this temporary seasonal appointment, extending to 1560 hours. Details in the Additional Information section. Travel and relocation expenses are the selectee’s responsibility. Alaska has no state income tax. Candidates may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries. Physical demands include standing, walking on varied terrain, carrying gear. Working conditions may involve exposure to extreme temperatures and adverse weather.
