Summary or Purpose
Responds to requests for animal control and removal; assists with veterinary care and record keeping.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. - Performs animal control duties; captures stray animals with remote capture devices; processes impounded animals per North Slope Borough Ordinances; issues citations to offenders; investigates animal bite complaints; vaccinates animals as required.
- Assists the Borough Police Department with stray animal problems and rabies control issues.
- Provides public education on animal care and rabies control.
- Performs basic veterinary clinic maintenance including cleaning and feeding animals, and infection control procedures.
- Performs basic animal care, aseptic techniques, surgery pack preparation, operating room procedures, and animal restraint.
- Performs general office functions required for daily operations of a veterinary practice including collecting impound fees, records management, scheduling appointments, and computer entry.
- Assists Public Health Officer with investigation of public health concerns, such as water sample testing, food poisoning investigation, sewage spills, and public facility inspections.
- Travels to the villages within the North Slope Borough.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of North Slope Borough policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of proper animal control practices, and symptoms, causes and control of rabies and other common animal diseases.
- Skill in capturing, controlling, containing, and transporting sick, injured, or rabid animals.
- Skill in caring for sick and injured animals.
- Skill in using personal computers and a variety of software applications.
- High school graduate or G.E.D., or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
- Valid Alaska Driver’s license that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
- Documentation that the individual is free from active pulmonary tuberculosis.
- Documentation of human rabies vaccination or waiver.
- Ability to lift 35 to 50 pounds regularly.
