Position: Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 (Marine Harvest Studies Crew Lead - PCN 115288)

What You Will Be Doing

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 (Marine Harvest Studies Crew Lead) located in Ketchikan, Alaska.

In This Position, You Will:

  • Lead the work of five Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 staff in collecting marine sport fishery harvest information and biological data from salmon and various groundfish species in the Ketchikan area.
  • Conduct a first level of review of all marine harvest creel data ensuring the information collected is accurate and complete.
  • Collect baseline sport harvest information in the Ketchikan area by conducting dockside angler interviews and collecting harvest, effort and biological/genetic data and samples.
  • Engage with the public in a positive and professional manner, representing the department and its mission.

Knowledge of Southeast Alaska’s sport fishery is a plus but not required; training will be provided.

The Working Conditions You Can Expect

This position is based in Ketchikan, AK and will be filled from mid‑May to mid‑September annually. Work includes office duties up to two days per week and field work at local harbors/boat launches, leading a crew of technicians conducting interviews with marine sport anglers and collecting biological information.

Qualifications
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Experience working as part of a team or team leader.
  • Experience collecting, organizing, and summarizing biological samples and data.
  • Flexible work schedule and ability to handle unscheduled changes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) for data entry.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • High school graduation or equivalent (GED, accredited coursework, or 12 years of formal education plus experience).
  • Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide (equivalent to Technician 2) OR one year of technical laboratory/field experience in fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • CPR and First Aid Training desired but not required.
  • Must not have any misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence.
Special Notes

Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low‑level flying, boat or skiff travel, and contact with chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
