Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 – Ketchikan, Alaska
Job OverviewThe Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Ketchikan, Alaska. This seasonal position is filled from mid‑May to mid‑September annually and involves working outdoors in all weather while contributing to fisheries science and management for Southeast Alaska.
What You Will Be Doing- Conduct dockside angler interviews.
- Gather essential data on fish harvest and effort.
- Collect biological/genetic samples from various salmon and groundfish species in the Ketchikan area.
- Recover coded-wire tags from marked Chinook and coho salmon.
- Engage with the public in a positive and professional manner, representing the department and its mission.
- High school graduation or the equivalent.
- OR three months as an entry‑level fish and wildlife technician or aide, equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
- OR six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or laboratory work.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Experience working as part of a team and independently.
- Experience collecting, organizing, and summarizing biological samples and data.
- Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule and handle unscheduled changes.
- Experience using personal computers and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
- Valid driver’s license.
- First aid and CPR training desired but not essential.
The position is based out of Ketchikan. Daily work includes conducting interviews at local harbors/boat launches and obtaining biological information in all weather conditions.

- Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with state and federal child labor laws.
- Positions are seasonal or temporary.
- This position may involve the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. Individuals convicted of a misdemeanor domestic‑violence offense must not apply.
