Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 – Homer, Alaska

Department: Alaska Department of Fish & Game, Division of Sport Fish
This permanent seasonal position (currently funded for 6 months, from April through September) is part of the Division of Sport Fish area management team based at the Homer office. The role oversees monitoring and management of sport fisheries in the Lower Cook Inlet management area and is primarily responsible for leading Chinook and Coho salmon escapement monitoring projects on the Anchor and Ninilchik Rivers.
- Lead daily enumeration and operation of sonar, instream video systems, fixed picket weirs, and floating resistance board weirs.
- Assist with beach seine surveys to collect biological data.
- Conduct razor clam stock assessment surveys.
- Collect Chinook salmon brood stock.
- Operate rotary screw traps and perform PIT tagging of Chinook salmon smolt.
- Support the salmon stocking program.

Benefits of Joining Our TeamThe Homer sport fish management team consists of 4 biologists and up to 12 technicians. This dynamic position offers the opportunity to gain experience on a variety of field projects while leading salmon escapement projects. Many incumbents move on to fishery biologist positions within ADF&G.
The Working Conditions You Can ExpectWork days are primarily spent at field sites, including the beaches of Cook Inlet, the Anchor River, Deep Creek, Ninilchik River, Homer harbor, and the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon on the Homer Spit. A valid driver’s license is required due to frequent travel to road‑accessible sites.
Who We Are Looking For- Good attention to detail for proofing data and reviewing sonar and video files.
- Experience maintaining and operating salmon escapement monitoring equipment (fixed‑picket weirs, floating weirs, sonar, instream video, remote power systems).
- Ability to multitask and reprioritize workload in a dynamic environment.
- Effective communication with crew, supervisors, and the public while working independently or in small groups.
- Strong interest in fisheries management and biology, specifically in the Lower Cook Inlet area.
Must be able to legally carry and effectively use firearms, obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR training, and hold a high‑school diploma or equivalent.
Special Requirements- Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low‑level flying, travel by boat or skiff, and contact with drugs or chemicals.
- Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents.
- Positions are seasonal or temporary.
- Six months’ experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide (equivalent to Technician 2 with the State of Alaska).
- OR one year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.
- Additional six months of relevant work experience can substitute for high‑school graduation.
- Bachelor of Science in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for up to two years of technical laboratory or field experience.
- Copies of all college transcripts (unofficial copies acceptable) if education is used to meet minimum qualifications.
