Overview
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Homer, Alaska. This position is open to all applicants.
What You Will Be DoingThis permanent seasonal position (currently funded for 6 months from April through September) is working in the Division of Sport Fish area management team based out of the Homer office that oversees the monitoring and management of sport fisheries in the Lower Cook Inlet management area. The incumbent will lead the daily enumeration and operation of sonar, instream video systems, fixed picket weirs, and floating resistance board weirs.
This position will also assist with beach seine surveys to collect biological data, proofing and finalizing data, razor clam stock assessment surveys, Chinook salmon brood stock collection, rotary screw trap operation and PIT tagging Chinook salmon smolt, and the salmon stocking program.

The Lower Cook Inlet Management area supports a variety of sport fisheries, including saltwater salmon and groundfish, shellfish, and both road accessible and remote access freshwater fisheries for salmon, steelhead and Dolly Varden. The duties of this position are directly involved in the division’s core functions of fisheries management, research, and enhancement.
The Homer sport fish management team is a cohesive crew with multiple salmon and shellfish field projects running during the summer. Currently there are 4 biologists and up to 12 technicians; this dynamic position is an opportunity to gain experience with all the projects while leading the salmon escapement projects. Most recent incumbents of this position now hold fishery biologist positions at ADF&G.
TheWorking Conditions You Can Expect
This position will be stationed from the Homer office but almost all work days will be spent at field sites throughout the management area, including the beaches of Cook Inlet, the Anchor River, Deep Creek, and Ninilchik River, the Homer harbor, and the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon on the Homer Spit.
- Due to the constant travel to road-accessible field sites, a valid driver’s license is required.
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies:
- Good attention to detail for proofing data and reviewing sonar and video files in season.
- Maintaining and operating salmon escapement monitoring equipment including fixed-picket weirs, floating weirs, sonar, instream video, and remote power systems.
- Capable of thriving in a dynamic working environment by being able to multitask and reprioritize workload based on changing needs.
- Ability to effectively communicate with crew, supervisors, and the public while working independently and in small groups.
- A strong interest in fisheries management and biology, Alaska, the Lower Cook Inlet area, ADF&G, and/or sport fisheries and fishing.

Minimum QualificationsRequired: High school graduation or the equivalent. AND Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2. OR One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper;
or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
