Job Description
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. This 12‑month full‑time permanent position provides essential support to the management of commercial shellfish and groundfish fisheries in the Bering Sea–Aleutian Islands.
What You Will Be Doing- Review and edit ADF&G commercial shellfish and groundfish fish tickets to ensure accuracy and completeness, enter and batch electronic and conventional fish tickets in eLandings, and generate final commercial fishery harvest reports using ADF&G’s Ocean
AK database as needed. - Maintain contact with processing plant fish ticket staff concerning reporting requirements, updates on new fish ticket reporting methods, and revisions/additions to state regulations.
- Assist fishery management biologists in tracking shellfish and groundfish fisheries through eLandings and Ocean
AK, verifying that all fish tickets have been received, the correct CFEC permit card was used, and the management program is correct. Contact processing plant staff for any missing or incorrect information. - Assist with determining if commercial fishing regulatory violations have occurred and, if so, notify the supervisor for this position and, with guidance, contact the Alaska Wildlife Troopers (AWT) and/or the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Office of Law Enforcement (OLE).
- Assist office staff by answering phones and assisting the public with fisheries management information, regulatory information, open/closed status of shellfish and groundfish fisheries, and other questions on commercial, subsistence, and sport fish regulations. Additional duties include notarizing state documents, checking mail, assisting with commercial vessel registrations, and dockside sampling as needed. Occasional at‑sea surveys to collect shellfish/groundfish biological data may be required.

Who We Are Looking For- Experience with computer‑based data entry and use of the Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for editing, verifying, and summarizing data.
- Effective verbal and written communication with coworkers, supervisors, members of the commercial fishing industry, and the public.
- Ability to multitask and reprioritize workload in a dynamic environment, working independently and in small groups.
- Strong interest or experience with commercial fisheries and/or the Bering Sea–Aleutian Islands region.
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- AND six months of experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide (equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician
2). - OR one year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; or a commercial fisher, guide, trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
- An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or laboratory work may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
