Position: WILDLAND FIRE & RESOURCE TECH 2-3 / GANNETT GLACIER CREW - OVERHEAD (PCN 10-9833, +3)

Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 2/3 – Palmer, Alaska

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is recruiting for a Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 2/3 in Palmer, Alaska. This position is open to all applicants.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Digging hand line and using power saws and water pumps.
  • Maintaining fire gear readiness and working on hazard fuels mitigation projects.
  • Provide daily supervision for 10-20 Firefighters on a Type II IA Crew.
  • Perform as an Incident Commander during the initial attack of low‑complexity wildland fires, lead firing and holding operations on initial or extended attack fires, provide input on fire line placement, and give thorough safety briefings.
  • Instruct NWCG courses and develop and lead training in basic wildland fire principles.
Mission & Culture

The State of Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, Mat‑Su/Southwest Area Office serves Alaskans through wildland fire suppression, management, and control. The Gannett Glacier Type II IA Crew is a state fire crew whose main objective is to support our local area and Alaska with a production‑oriented fire‑management service and all‑hazard response.

The Working Environment
  • Based out of Palmer, Alaska.
  • Dispatched nationally and to Canada to respond to fires and all‑risk incidents.
  • Working and living in remote environments with no internet or cell service.
  • 14‑21 days hiking to work, performing manual labor tasks.
  • Working as a single resource or as part of a team.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Six months of trainee or entry‑level wildland fire fighting or forestry field experience; or equivalent experience, including service as a Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 1.
  • Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System.
  • For Technician 3:
    Twelve months of wildland fire/v forestry experience, with at least six months at the developmental level;
    Red Card qualification.
  • Education substitution:
    Completed coursework from an accredited college or vocational‑technical school in forestry, fire science, or closely related field may substitute for six months of general field experience.
Special Notes
  • Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Most positions require National Incident Qualification System certifications in fire operations, wildland fire prevention, or aviation support.
  • Applicant must pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level (3‑mile hike carrying a 45‑pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less).
  • Applicant must possess an Alaska driver’s license (or be eligible to obtain one before reporting to duty).
  • Positions may require travel in and out of state, stand‑by or recall status, assignments up to 14‑21 days, flying in small aircraft, and handling hazardous materials.
  • Some positions may require a commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.
  • Applicants with a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction must not apply.
