Position
Biometrician 1/2/3 – Division of Sport Fish, Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Locations:
Fairbanks, Anchorage, or Juneau.
- Ensure the statistical and biometric quality of research projects for sound sport fisheries management.
- Design studies and determine appropriate sample sizes and expected precision.
- Conduct data analysis using classical and Bayesian statistical methods.
- Create and co‑author operational plans and technical reports.
- Provide biometric support and consultation to regional fisheries managers and research project leaders.
- Graduate degree in Statistics, Biometrics, or a biological science (master’s preferred). Graduate‑level coursework (500+ series) in statistics/biometrics required.
- Broad knowledge of quantitative biological research methods (experimental design, variance estimation, regression, spatial and time‑series analysis, multivariate methods, generalized linear and mixed‑effects models, mark‑recapture, Bayesian techniques).
- Proficiency with statistical software (R, JAGS/Win Bugs, SAS, Program Mark) and spatial data programs (ArcGIS/Arc Map).
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to present results to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Independent, proactive work approach.
- Biometrician 1:
Master’s degree and at least 18 semester (27 quarter) hours of graduate‑level statistics/biometrics. Conditional offer possible while completing degree. - Biometrician 2:
Master’s degree + 18 semester (27 quarter) hours of graduate‑level statistics/biometrics and one year of professional biometric experience (or equivalent combination of advanced study and experience). Reductions for combined study and experience are allowed. - Biometrician 3:
Master’s degree + 18 semester (27 quarter) hours of graduate‑level statistics/biometrics, and two years of full‑proficiency biometric research experience (or equivalent combination totaling four years). Reductions for combined study and experience are allowed.
