Job Description
This position is open to Department Employees only. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Habitat Biologist 3 located in Douglas, Alaska. The successful candidate will manage and conduct hydrologic investigations to provide science‑based information and recommendations that support fish habitat protection in Southeast Alaska.
Responsibilities- Install and maintain streamgages and perform stream discharge measurements.
- Collect, process, and archive hydrologic data using the WISKI database; administer the database and train other staff in its use.
- Write grants and manage grant administration, including budgeting and logistical planning.
- Prepare operational plans and fisheries data series reports.
- Supervise a Habitat Biologist 2.
- Perform field work throughout Southeast Alaska, including short‑duration trips (1–3 days) and extended field periods under variable weather and terrain conditions.
- Extensive knowledge of Alaska fish species, life histories, and habitat suitability requirements.
- Proficiency in surface water data collection, rating‑curve development, and mean daily flow record processing.
- Understanding of hydropower impacts on fish resources and the FERC licensing process.
- Ability to perform field work in remote areas and inclement weather throughout the year.
- Strong organizational, attention to detail, and written and verbal communication skills.
- A valid driver’s license;
First Aid/CPR training; wildlife safety training. - Required minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management. - One year of full‑performance professional biologist experience (e.g., Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska).
- Substitution options: 24 semester hours in a relevant biology field with 16 upper division hours, plus 12 semester hours in two of chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

- Copy of college transcripts (unofficial transcripts acceptable).

- Copy of last performance evaluation.
