Job Description

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, is recruiting for an Analyst/Programmer 3 in Fairbanks. This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.

What You Will Be Doing

This position is one of two programmers for the Division of Geological & Geophysical Survey's volcano logy program and the interagency Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). Working with our lead programmer, this position uses high-level computer languages and complex tools to design, develop, modify, document, and test the data management and storage systems used by AVO.

Mission and Values/Culture

This analyst/programmer 3 position is housed in the Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys within the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. The DGGS mission is to determine the potential of Alaska land for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction materials, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (AS 41.08.020).

The Volcanology Program resides within the Geologic Hazards section at DGGS alongside Landslide, Coastal, Climate and Cryosphere, Geological Health, and Earthquake & Tsunami Hazard Programs, and is also part of the multi-agency Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of computer programming experience in a recognized computer language. One year of this experience must have been in a business application, scientific application, microcomputer or computer information management support specialty.

Substitution

A bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Science (CS) or Computer Information Systems (CIS), or a related degree with (18) semester/(24) quarter hours of CS or CIS may substitute for one year of the required experience. An associate's degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems may substitute for nine months of the required experience.

Special Note

An applicant who is considered under the Substitution above qualifies to apply for this job class IF the applicable coursework is completed within three (3) months of hire. Under this option, an applicant may receive a conditional job offer; however, proof of completion will be required prior to final appointment and reporting for duty.

Individual positions at each level in this class series may require expertise in a particular area of programming or analysis. Recruitment and selection will be on the basis of these requirements. For some positions in these job classes, a background investigation including fingerprinting is required.
