The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for multiple Correctional Officer 1 positions at the Lemon Creek Correctional Complex (LCCC) located in Juneau, Alaska.

What you will be doing
  • Build a career with security in benefits, salary, and opportunities for personal growth and advancement as part of a team that serves the community.
  • Work a week on, week off schedule: 6am–6pm one week, then 6pm–6am the next week, alternating. This schedule results in only 6 months of scheduled work per year and three consecutive weeks off when taking a week of vacation.
  • Upon arrival and after orientation, begin as supervisor of inmates with a Field Training Officer to learn care and custody, security, and reform of inmates.
  • During the first 12–14 months, participate in structured field training within the facility and attend a 7-week Correctional Officer Academy. Upon successful completion and certification by the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC), you will promote to Correctional Officer 2.

Correctional Officers interact daily with offenders to help them become better citizens and reduce recidivism.

The Lemon Creek Correctional Center operates 24/7/365 and houses both male and female inmates (capacity up to 226) with approximately 90 staff members. Mandatory overtime may be required if minimum staffing is not met.

Who we are looking for
  • Highly motivated applicants with strong written and oral communication, initiative, maturity, assertive leadership, adaptability, and the ability to mentor and coach others.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, flexibility, honesty, integrity, attention to detail, and solid computer skills.
  • Ability to interface with other agencies and the public; knowledge of Department Policies and Procedures.

At the time of employment: be 21 years of age and a United States citizen or United States National; have a high school diploma or GED recognized by a state or local school district, or have a GED certificate.

Special notes and requirements
  • Appointment to Correctional Officer 1 is conditional on successful completion of a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and medical examination.
  • This class is considered technical/paraprofessional for minimum qualifications purposes.
  • Possess a valid U.S. driver's license at time of appointment.
  • Employees must be willing to work shift assignments; on-call may be required.
  • APSC requirements: individuals not continuously employed since Feb 9, 1991 in a similar role must obtain a basic correctional officer certificate within 14 months of hire.
  • Some disqualifications apply for prior employment actions; disclosures may affect eligibility for interview or consideration.
  • A qualified applicant may not have felonies or certain misdemeanors; other restrictions apply as listed in the full notice.
