Correctional Officer 1 – Anchorage Correctional Complex (ACC)

The Department of Corrections in Alaska is recruiting multiple Correctional Officer 1 positions for the Anchorage Correctional Complex (ACC), located in Anchorage, Alaska.

Embark on a career in Corrections with numerous training and promotion paths. As a correctional officer, you will play a vital role in reforming those in custody and helping them positively contribute to society. After 12‑14 months of field training and a seven‑week Correctional Officer Academy, you will earn the APSC Correctional Officer Certificate and be promoted to Correctional Officer 2.

The mission of ACC is to provide a secure environment for staff and offenders that promotes public safety and offers staff development, along with reformative offender programming that ensures safety and efficient resource management.

Correctional Officers receive up to 16 days of paid leave in their first two years of employment (increasing with tenure) and 12 paid holidays annually. The position requires an 84‑hour work week with a "week on/week off" schedule that alternates between day and night shifts.

ACC is a dynamic facility offering career advancement opportunities and specialized training programs. It covers over 1,900 square miles and serves 40 % of Alaska’s population. The 253,000‑square‑foot, 14‑acre complex houses up to 863 inmates and includes an acute psychiatric unit and a full medical unit.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, using business software and effectively communicating required information.
• Knowledge of self‑defense, firearms, appropriate force to protect oneself/others, and the ability to act quickly during emergencies, including conflict de‑escalation.
• Ability to read and comprehend statutes, regulations, and procedures, apply them to specific situations, and explain procedures to the public and inmates.
• Assist in maintaining order and discipline, operate security control rooms, handle unruly or violent prisoners, use minimum force, conduct routine security checks and inspections.
• Assist in creating and maintaining an atmosphere conducive to prisoner rehabilitation.

• Must be at least 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen or national, and have a high‑school diploma (or GED) or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license issued within the United States.
• Willingness to work shifts, on‑call availability may be required.
• Appointment conditional on background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and medical examination.
• May not have been convicted of certain felonies, misdemeanors, or conduct described in the detailed restrictions (they can be summarized as sections on domestic violence, drug offenses, and other disqualifying crimes).

Appointment is conditional, pending successful completion of a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening, medical exam, and APSIN clearance. The position requires use or possession of a firearm and is subject to the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) screening.
