Job Overview
Position:
Correctional Officer 2 (Alaska Department of Corrections). Continuous recruitment.
Embark on a career in Corrections with extensive training and promotion paths. Serve as a correctional officer, responsible for:
- Following oral and written instructions; using business software; communicating information effectively.
- Learning and applying self‑defence, firearms, appropriate use of force to protect self and others; acting quickly in emergencies and diffusing conflicts with sound judgment.
- Reading and understanding statutes, regulations and procedures, applying them to specific situations and explaining procedures to the public, staff and inmates.
- Maintaining order and discipline; operating security control rooms; handling unruly and violent prisoners using minimum force.
- Conducting routine security checks and inspections.
- Contributing to an environment conducive to prisoner rehabilitation.
- Minimum one year of experience as a Correctional Officer 1 or equivalent.
- High school diploma or equivalent, or GED.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license; a commercial driver’s license may be required for some positions.
- Must be at least 21 years old and a U.S. citizen or national.
- Successful completion of a background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening and medical examination.
- Disqualifying convictions include felony, misdemeanor of domestic violence, serious dishonesty or moral turpitude, controlled‑substance offenses, recent marijuana use, and denied certification by the Alaska Police Standards Council.
- Must hold a current correctional officer certificate issued by the Alaska Police Standards Council within 14 months of hire.
- Up to 16 days of paid leave in the first two years of employment, increasing with years of service.
- 12 to 15 paid holidays per year.
- Eight‑week rotation of “week on/ week off” schedule alternating day and night shifts (84‑hour work week).
- Possible moving and relocation incentives.
Facilities are open 24/7, 365 days a year, across 13 state facilities for unsentenced, sentenced and federal inmates. Staff includes medical, psychiatric and other specialists.

- Mat‑Su Pretrial – Mat‑Su Pretrial Facility
- Palmer – Palmer Correctional Center
- Seward – Spring Creek Correctional Center
- Wasilla/Pt. Mackenzie – Goose Creek Correctional Center
