Position: Senior Field Service Technician - (Juneau, AK)

Senior Field Service Technician

GCI’s Senior Field Service Technician represents the company’s service philosophy by assisting customers who have purchased and are using GCI products and services, or are considering upgrading or expanding them. A $2,500 hiring bonus is available for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, service, and troubleshoot telecommunications equipment including analog or digital systems for video, voice, and data services from the tap or demarcation location to the customer’s premises.
  • Perform routine maintenance and operations on radio frequency, analog, microwave, fiber‑optic, and AC/DC components.
  • Refer issues between the demarc and headend or distribution center to network technicians.
  • Execute disconnects, reconnects, and relocation of services as instructed; repair or replace worn components and faulty connections.
  • Use test equipment to measure and adjust signal strength for optimal reception.
  • Conduct preventative or corrective maintenance such as underground cable locates, outage response, rewiring, upgrading cabling, and impairment mitigation.
  • Communicate with customers on‑site and present additional service offerings.
  • Support senior staff technicians and mentor junior technicians.
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance, manage truck stock, and follow company safety and driving policies.
Essential Duties
  • Perform complex installation, service, disconnects, testing, and repair of video, voice, and data services.
  • Organize daily workload and use industry‑standard test equipment and hand tools.
  • Explain non‑technical procedures, equipment operation, answer customer questions, and promote sales of additional services.
  • Evaluate field conditions, perform tests, and measure signal quality.
  • Ensure proper cabling from the tap or demarc to the customer premise equipment.
  • Update service orders or trouble tickets with Dispatch or SMC.
  • Assist with new installations and handle trouble tickets promptly.
  • Verify accuracy of written work orders, manage discrepancies, collect payments, and gather customer signatures.
  • Escalate issues as needed to the appropriate department or management team.
  • Work with senior technicians and respond to outages or other duties as required.
  • Guide, train, and mentor junior technicians.

Job Requirements

This senior level position functions in a lead role with the ability to act as a supervisor when needed. Candidates will act as subject‑matter experts, anticipate and resolve problems, and complete tasks with minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum six (6) years of broadband, data, networking, technical telecom, or related experience, including one (1) year of complex field experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record; required to complete defensive driving and other site‑specific courses.
  • Experience in an arctic or remote environment may be required for some locations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in electronics, telecommunications, or related field.
  • Telecommunications experience and certifications (e.g., Multi‑Line Hunt, Directory Number Hunt).
  • Industry or job‑specific certifications.
