GCI's Trainee Wireless RF Technician
Responsible for performing advanced troubleshooting, optimization, upgrades, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of Wireless RF transmission lines, antennas, and cell site or transport related equipment for the Wireless GSM/CDMA/UMTS/LTE Radio Access Network (RAN) and Microwave network with oversight by senior level technicians. Expected to work with moderate supervision while contributing quality service to the company’s customers and supporting other departments’ efforts to improve customer experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Entry level position supporting senior technicians in basic equipment installations, testing, and Operational Site Acceptance. Learn to use and operate multiple types of test equipment, software tools, and travel to various locations throughout Alaska.
- Attend and successfully complete tower climbing training; perform basic installation and repairs while working at heights.
- Gain understanding of cell site installation, modifications, repairs, and test procedures. Upon completion of experience qualifications, knowledge test (written and physical).
- Perform installation, adjustment, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of Wireless RF transmission lines, antennas, and other cell site or transport related equipment across Urban and Rural Wireless markets, including microwave, tower mounted radios, cellular antennas, TMA’s, fiber cabling, DC power, FAA warning beacons, and tower lighting systems.
- Provide technical support for technicians in remote locations via phone, command line interface, Cherwell ticket maintenance, and workflow.
- Operate test equipment to conduct corrective tasks related to transmission tower, antennas, coaxial cabling, grounding, and other systems.
- Support Engineers in field-related aspects for network optimization projects by collaborating with RF Engineering and optimization support team for pre‑ and post‑optimization adjustments and statistical analysis.
- Perform site audits of Cell Sites and towers to ensure installations meet specifications; update and maintain daily work & safety logs; assist with FAA/FCC documentation and risk assessment database.
- Perform daily operational checks on all cell site RF and associated equipment.
- Maintain compliance with documentation, company, safety, and regulatory policies.
- Complete progression training comprised of written, face‑to‑face, vendor, and on‑the‑job training.

- Proficiency in computer skills and MS Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel).
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must complete and remain a certified tower climber.
- 6 months of telecommunications, technical, or customer service experience.
- Associate’s Degree in electronics, telecommunications trade school, or equivalent training.
- Prior tower climber certification.
- Other telecom industry specific certifications or job‑specific certifications.
- Access to reliable transportation may be required for occasional travel between retail store locations, offices, worksites, or other locations as needed.
- High degree of balance, coordination, and strength to ascend and work at heights up to 200 feet.
- Daily movement on uneven or unstable surfaces; potential exposure to weather elements.
- Manipulation of equipment and supplies up to 50‑pounds.
- Excellent visual and auditory acuity; ability to distinguish colors and signals amid background noise.
- Work in extreme temperature and weather conditions; cramped, dusty, wet, or cold environments.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, on‑call, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
A pre‑employment drug test and/or ongoing random drug or alcohol testing program may be required to satisfy contract conditions.
