What You Will Be Doing
The Girls Detention Unit provides supervision and services to adolescent females who are awaiting court appearances. As a Juvenile Justice Counselor you will be part of a team dedicated to making a difference in the lives of Alaskan youth. You will influence, inspire, and transform the lives of juvenile offenders and their families through therapeutic programs that incorporate a restorative justice approach.
You will deliver skills and knowledge in life skills, anger management, drug and alcohol education, and other areas to help the youth navigate their future.
The Division of Juvenile Justice’s mission is to hold juvenile offenders accountable, promote the safety and restoration of victims and communities, and assist offenders and their families in developing skills to prevent crime. In this role, you will support this mission by working with the youth on their individual needs while maintaining the security and safety of residents, visitors, staff, and facility buildings.

The Working Environment You Can ExpectThis position is located in the McLaughlin Youth Center at 2600 Providence Drive, Anchorage. As a member of the Girls Detention Unit, you will work inside a 24‑hour secure facility and may be required to work shifts, holidays, weekends, and occasional overtime.

All applicants must be Alaska residents. The position may be filled at either Level 1 or Level 2, depending on qualifications and experience.
Juvenile Justice Counselor 1- A high school diploma or GED
- Must be 20 years of age or older
- A high school diploma or GED
- Six months of paid or volunteer experience teaching or coaching group activities for youth
- Must be 20 years of age or older, or six months of experience as a Juvenile Justice Counselor 1 with the State of Alaska (or equivalent elsewhere)
- Demonstrated achievement of department‑approved performance standards
- Alternatively, six months of experience in adult or juvenile corrections, law enforcement, parole, probation, residential treatment casework, or social casework
- Completed coursework from an accredited college may substitute for required experience (3 semester or 4 quarter hours of post‑secondary education are equal to one month of work experience)
- Military experience may substitute on a month‑for‑month basis
All successful candidates must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including state and FBI fingerprint‑based checks.
