What You Will Be DoingThis position pilots State‑owned/leased single‑engine reciprocating and turbine helicopters in support of law enforcement, Search and Rescue (SAR), and other missions as directed.
As the “lead” pilot for this category; assign work, evaluate performance, ensure staffing levels are appropriate, and coordinate with the Aviation Program Manager to ensure program goals are met. Regularly work with other pilots, staff, and commissioned members to ensure all flights are accomplished in accordance with federal law and within department policy.
May also perform the duties of flight instruction as a Multi Engine Instructor (MEI), Multi Engine Instrument Instructor (MEII), Light Single‑Engine Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Light Single‑Engine Certified Flight Instrument Instructor (CFII), Rotary Wing Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) or Rotary Wing Certified Instrument Instructor (CFII). May provide recurrent flight training to other department pilots on flight status. May be assigned to fly and/or maintain complex aircraft operated by the Aircraft Section.
Aircraft Pilot 2's may fill the following duty positions based on location or operational need:
- Rotary Wing Pilot
- Rotary Wing Certified Flight Instructor/Instrument (CFI/CFII)

The Working Conditions You Can ExpectThis position is located and based out of our Anchorage‑based Aircraft Section at the Lake Hood Seaplane base. Our Anchorage Aircraft Section has a beautiful view of Lake Hood. The position requires travel throughout Alaska providing aircraft support.
The work environment is friendly, team‑oriented, and productive. You will share an office with other professionals. The successful applicant must be able to work with frequent interruptions, be self‑motivated, and work well with others to be successful.
This position may work an alternate work schedule such as eight days on and six days off. This position does not offer housing, nor does it offer travel outside Anchorage paid travel to and from the worksite.

- This position will travel throughout Alaska providing aircraft and training support.
- Correlation level knowledge of flying maneuvers required for day (required), night, and instrument flying (desired) conditions, skill piloting rotary wing aircraft operated by the department
- Rotary wing engine commercial pilot certificates and instrument pilot rating. A total of 1,500 hours flying aircraft which includes 500 hours as Pilot‑in‑Command (PIC) rotary wing aircraft. Of this required flight time, 500 hours as PIC must be Alaska time (100 hours of which were logged within the 12 months prior to employment) and 1,500 hours of rotary wing turbine engine experience preferred.
