Job Description

The State Equipment Fleet (SEF) of the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Advanced Journey/Lead to help keep Alaska moving. The role includes professional maintenance of heavy‑ and light‑equipment on secondary roads, rural airports, and other agency vehicles. The incumbent will resolve complex equipment problems and provide routine and specialized repair on a variety of vehicles.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair heavy‑ and light‑equipment for construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other vehicles.
  • Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify systems including transmissions, drives, suspension, engine and emission, fuel injection, hydraulic and brake systems (air and electrical).
  • Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods.
Qualifications
  • Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair and maintenance.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing conditions and unexpected obstacles.
  • Vehicle maintenance knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts and systems.
  • Self‑management skills: sets realistic goals, works with minimal supervision, demonstrates initiative and commitment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (Class

    A) within 120 days of hire.
Location

MP 306 Dalton Highway, Sag River, AK. Travel in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations, with day trips and overnight stays as required.

Requirements
  • Valid Class A CDL at time of interview (Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License).
  • Provide a copy of Class A CDL, front and back.
  • Submit three professional references (name, title, phone).
  • Pass DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and pre‑employment drug test before commencing CDL duties.
  • Provide own hand tools; receive bi‑weekly tool allowance as determined by LTC contract.
