Position: Bus Driver - Capital Transit (Part-Time)

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

The Operations Center is located in the Mendenhall Valley at 10099 Bentwood Place, Juneau, Alaska. This posting may be used to fill more than one vacancy. Part‑time positions are 15–30 hours per week, with opportunities to work additional hours. Drivers may bid on vacant schedules based on seniority.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Safely and courteously operate 30–40′ mass transit vehicles with passengers while adhering to strict time schedules.
  • Adhere to traffic and safety regulations.
  • Collect passenger fare.
  • Perform thorough pre‑trip inspections.
  • Attend regular safety meetings and training sessions.
  • Operate a two‑way radio to communicate with dispatch and other drivers.
  • Accurately complete daily logs, incident reports, ridership information, and vehicle inspection reports.
  • Maintain vehicle appearance; perform light cleaning and routinely check conditions such as lights and tires; report mechanical failures or defects to maintenance personnel.
  • Communicate verbally with individuals of various backgrounds and abilities regarding routes, schedules, and transfer points.
  • Maintain order aboard buses; report acts of disorderly conduct or vandalism to supervisor.
  • Assist passengers requiring special assistance, including operating wheelchair lifts and restraints, and providing support for boarding or in emergencies; ability to lift up to 50 pounds required.
QUALIFICATIONS Education

None

Experience

Three (3) months of professional driving experience requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Other Requirements

A valid Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for vehicles equipped with air brakes and with passenger endorsement at the time of application. Alternatively, a valid Class A or B CDL with air brake and passenger endorsement from another U.S. state at the time of application, and the candidate must obtain a valid State of Alaska Class “B” CDL with appropriate endorsements within 30 days of appointment.

A current driving record issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles in the applicant’s state of residence is required at time of application. No more than one (1) moving violation or preventable accident within the past 36 months.

SPECIAL NOTE

The position is safety‑sensitive and is subject to U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Transit Administration drug and alcohol testing. Applicants are required to provide the City and Borough of Juneau with signed written releases requesting USDOT drug and alcohol records from all previous USDOT‑covered employers within the last two years. Failure to do so will result in rescission of the employment offer.

Applicants are also required to disclose any positive or refused pre‑employment drug tests within the last two years. New hires must complete a medical evaluation and post‑employment drug testing for controlled substances as required by FTA and CBJ policy.
