Job Summary
Engineering & Public Works is looking to fill a Long‑Term Temporary Capital Transit Service Technician II position. The role involves hands‑on mechanical work in an industrial environment and in the field operating, cleaning, and maintaining the various vehicles and equipment used by Capital Transit. Candidates interested in furthering their Alaska CDL endorsements and mechanical experience are encouraged to apply.
Working Hours and LocationThe position typically works 10‑hour shifts, Wednesday through Saturday, 6:30 am – 5:00 pm at the Capital Transit Bus Barn Maintenance Facility in the Valley. The actual shift may vary.
Responsibilities- Vehicle and facility maintenance and cleanliness, including bus stops and shelters.
- Washing, fueling, and performing pre‑trip inspections on Capital Transit’s buses and support vehicles.
- Facility cleaning and trash removal.
- Follow assignments given by the Transit Superintendent; work is checked for completeness and adherence to schedules.
- Perform heavy lifting and maintain physical endurance; work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
- Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License at the time of application.
- Or a valid Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake and passenger endorsement from any U.S. state at the time of application; the applicant must obtain a valid State of Alaska Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License, including appropriate endorsements, within nine months of appointment.

Experience as an automotive serviceman, mechanic or operator is desired but not required.
The position is safety‑sensitive and subject to USDOT Federal Transit Administration drug and alcohol testing. Applicants must provide the City and Borough of Juneau with signed written releases requesting USDOT drug and alcohol records from all previous USDOT‑covered employers within the last two years. Compliance with pre‑employment testing and other security requirements is required for employment.
