SUMMARY

Alaska Marine Trucking (AMT) is hiring for its Dock to Driver Training Program. The program pays for CDL training for employees who wish to obtain a Class-A CDL. Successful candidates will be hired as Freight Handlers while they complete the training and will ultimately become Class-A Drivers. During the training period employees will learn docking and delivery routes. AMT covers all CDL training costs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain a constant state of alertness and safe manner in a safety-sensitive position.
  • Inspect truck and trailer for defects and complete daily vehicle inspection form.
  • Check shipping papers for proper descriptions, hazardous materials, weight, packaging, labeling and other required info.
  • Collect payment for delivered goods and delivery charges when necessary.
  • Maneuver vehicle safely through heavy traffic, inclement weather, and difficult loading/unloading facilities.
  • Maintain telephone or radio contact with Dispatcher.
  • Operate forklifts (3,000–8,000 lb capacity) to move freight between equipment, warehouse and yard locations.
  • Load and unload truck/trailer, securing shipments with straps, ropes, lumber, etc.
  • Assist in maintenance of company property, including sweeping warehouse floor and housekeeping duties.
  • Report all safety hazards, incidents, and/or accidents involving cargo, vehicles, driver, personnel or citizens.
  • Maintain records for compliance with State, Federal, and corporate regulations (vehicle inspections, hazardous material manifests, permits).
  • Work flexible hours.
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent and a Commercial Learner’s Permit from the State of Alaska.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, interpret, and write documents such as bills of lading, tariffs, delivery receipts, military documents, procedure manuals, employee and safety rules and manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively and clearly with customers, vendors, managers, and other employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to obtain a Class-A CDL from the State of Alaska.
  • Ability to understand detailed written and oral instructions, prioritize tasks, and problem-solve in time and safety-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to read and understand wire and hydraulic schematics.
  • Organize and follow through on projects and tasks to completion.
  • Multi-task in a fast-paced environment and handle demanding customer needs.
  • Detail-oriented, good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Flexible to work extended hours and adapt to change.
  • Work well under pressure and handle demanding customers’ needs.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports in the provided maintenance software.
  • Capable of working with little or no supervision and as part of a team.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
  • AK Class-A Commercial Learner’s Permit with no restrictions.
  • Pass written tests for endorsements:
    Hazardous Materials, Tanker, Doubles/Triples.
  • Driving record meeting State of Alaska, FMCSA, and company requirements for CDL.
  • Obtain Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Eligible for Transportation Worker Identification Credential.
  • Obtain forklift certification for operating forklifts with 3,000–8,000 lb capacity.
