SUMMARY:

Transport and deliver freight to and from customer facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Safety is a priority; maintain a constant state of alertness and safe operations.
• Inspect truck and trailer for defects, complete and submit daily vehicle inspection form.
• Verify shipping papers for proper descriptions of commodities, weight, packaging, marking, labeling, and other required information.
• Collect payment for delivered goods and delivery charges when necessary.
• Maneuver vehicle safely while transporting cargo in heavy traffic, inclement weather, and challenging loading/unloading facilities.
• Maintain telephone or radio contact with Dispatcher.
• Operate forklifts (3,000–100,000 lbs) to move freight between equipment, warehouse, and yard locations.
• Load and unload truck/trailer, securing shipments with straps, ropes, lumber, etc.; may involve working on flatbeds or containers.
• Assist in maintenance of company property, including sweeping warehouse floor and housekeeping duties.
• Report all safety hazards, incidents, or accidents involving cargo, vehicles, drivers, personnel, or citizens.
• Maintain records required for compliance with State, Federal, and corporate rules (vehicle inspections, hazardous material manifests, permits).
• Work flexible hours as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess mechanical aptitude and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Attendance and timeliness are essential functions; employee regularly works at least 40 hours per week.

EDUCATION AND/OR

EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent;
Class A CDL with all required endorsements.

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

Ability to read, interpret, and write documents such as bills of lading, tariffs, delivery receipts, military documents, procedure manuals, employee and safety rules and manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and routine reports.

Ability to speak effectively and clearly with customers, vendors, managers, and employees.

MATHEMATICAL

SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

OTHER

• Read and understand wire and hydraulic schematics.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:

• Current Class “A” Alaska Commercial Driver’s License with Hazardous Materials endorsement.
• Acceptable driving record per company standards.
• Current Medical Examiner’s Card or Certificate.
• Ability to obtain TWIC card.
• Ability to obtain Forklift certifications for 3,000–100,000 lb capacity.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Regularly sit, stand, walk, talk, hear and balance, stoop, kneel or crouch during inspections.
• Use hands, arms and fingers for steering, manipulating, operating controls and lifting or moving freight.
• Operate keyboard, phone, fax, radio, and other office machinery.
• Hear, speak and listen while communicating with telephones, radios and in person.
• Possess close, distance, peripheral and depth perception.
• Meet vision requirements (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception).
• Regularly lift/move up to 25 lb, occasionally up to 50 lb.
• Possible light duty warehousing work and tractor driving.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Work near moving mechanical parts; exposure to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, chemicals, wet/humid conditions, high or precarious places.
• Occasional risk of electric shock.
• Noise level ranges from moderate to loud.
• Exposure to extreme weather (cold, heat).

COMMENTS:

Successful candidate must pass an employment drug test, background investigation and FMCSA Clearing House check.
