Job Information
Open to any current Municipal employee within Solid Waste Services.
This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (Local 302) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Example of DutiesUnder supervision, the Refuse Disposal Maintenance Assistant performs a variety of unskilled tasks of a manual nature. Work involves moderate to heavy physical exertion: litter pick up and grounds maintenance as needed such as lawn mowing, weed whacking, shoveling, replacing signs, and painting. Operate snow blower and sander truck. Perform traffic control at the Central Transfer Station (CTS), Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL), and the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to direct customers to proper drop off locations and reduce traffic congestion and wait times.
Assemble gas collection system pipe with hand tools. Operate skid steers and mini loaders for snow removal, site cleaning, and metals recycling. Assist skilled employees as needed in maintenance duties. Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent

- must be at least 18 years of age. Must have physical capability to perform the work described.
- A valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
- Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Driver's License, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history.
