PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to operate, monitor, and maintain water treatment plant systems and related equipment to provide quality drinking water for public use. This position may also perform technical/skilled work involving inspection, maintenance and/or repair of utility equipment and machinery, or technical/skilled work involving the utility certified drinking water laboratory.

Water Plant Operator C: $47,527.64

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operates Reverse Osmosis Membrane, Nano Filtration Membrane and Ion Exchange water treatment plant systems including all associated equipment and machinery to maintain adequate water flow, proper water treatment, and proper plant functions under the supervision of the Chief Water Plant Operator
Controls water treatment plant operations in accordance with all established regulations, standards, and procedures; primary treatment systems consist of reverse osmosis, nanofiltration and ion exchange processes; ancillary treatment systems consist of raw water supply wells, pre-treatment/filtration, degasification/odor control, disinfection, gas and liquid chemical feed systems, finished water, storage and pumping facilities, and waste/by-product disposal
Completes items as described in the operator duties checklists; specific duties include, but are not limited to routine water analysis, determines need to change various chemical dosages based on lab results and alarm systems, calculates appropriate chemical dosages and changes dosages by adjusting feed systems, changes plant settings on SCADA system, makes adjustment to facility production volumes to maintain adequate water storage, fills chemical day tanks, changes chlorine gas cylinders
Regularly monitors and inspects systems for leaks/issues, documents issues or malfunctioning equipment on facility work order system, runs stand-by emergency power generators, conducts site visits at all facility water supply wells, inspects on- and off-site storage and pumping facilities, makes appropriate computer or handwritten log entries to document activities throughout shift.
Maintains logs/records of plant operations, meter/gauge readings, test results, chemical applications, equipment operations, and other data; enters data into computer system; saves and submits daily computer results for analysis and review by facility management
Checks facility SCADA system frequently throughout shift to maintain proper treatment and operation of entire water plant; troubleshoots problems which may arise; responds to alarms and takes appropriate action.
Monitors inventory levels of department equipment, chemicals, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities and initiates requests for new or replacement materials; receives incoming deliveries, verifies materials with packing slip, and forwards shipping documentation for processing; unloads and delivers/transports deliveries of chemicals/materials to appropriate location.
Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep plant facilities, equipment, and tools in operable condition, monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety
Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reviews all safety data sheets (SDS); participates in required safety trainings
Communicates status of plant operations to Chief Operator, facility management, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and procedures; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate
Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, or other computer programs; performs basic maintenance of computer system and office equipment
