DefinitionUnder direct to general supervision, performs routine drafting and general sub‑professional engineering office work; provides accurate engineering information to contractors, developers, public agencies, utility companies and the general public; prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes for engineering purposes, according to specified procedures; and performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
DistinguishingCharacteristics
The Engineering Intern class is a part‑time non‑benefitted (hourly) classification in which current students within a University system who are seeking an engineering career and degree can receive on‑the‑job training and experience in the performance of routine and sub‑professional engineering office work. Work assignments are closely monitored and reviewed primarily for technical accuracy and quality of production. Employees learn to apply concept and work procedures and methods in assigned area of responsibility to resolve provokes and issues that are specific less complex, and/or repetitive.
Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise working solely with the supervisor. The Engineering Intern class intended for a period not to exceed one (1) year for recent engineering graduates, and not to exceed two (2) years for current engineering students.

Essential Functions- Basic principles of mathematics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, computer‑based software for drawing, business applications including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Basic knowledge of engineering drafting methods.
- Civil or traffic engineering map drafting.
- Computer‑aided design and drafting (CADD) procedures.
- Record keeping, report preparation, and filing systems, principles, procedures, and methods.
- Methods of preparing and processing various records, forms and other documents specific to assigned function or program.
- Standard office management and clerical practices and procedures.
- Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.
- English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
- Techniques for effectively representing the City in contacts with those encountered in the course of work.
- Methods and techniques for preparing technical and administrative reports, and general business correspondence.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
