Position: Mechanical Design Intern-1

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and related data to assess factors affecting component designs and the procedures and instructions to be followed.
  • Use computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment/software:
    Auto Desk Software (AutoCAD, Revit, Navis Works) and Dassault Systems Software (Solid Works, Visualize).
  • Help establish and utilize the Engineering Design Library, including a 3D model library of parts and a 2D block library of parts/details.
  • Provide accurate time estimates for work required.
  • Work effectively and efficiently, alone or as a member of the team, to design layouts, mechanical components, electromechanical components, and systems; utilize the team for help and to resolve design issues.
  • Apply drafting principles and manufacturing standards:
    Drawing Standards, Weld Standards, Piping Design Standards, Document Control Standards, Design Software Standards, Machining Standards.
  • Apply sound drafting and design principals in development and documentation of products.
  • Select parts/materials/design components and apply part numbers as needed.
  • Use complex math needed in design development.
  • Produce illustrations for reference manuals and technical publications.
  • Relay an idea or concept through conversation, freehand drawings, or reference other design examples.
  • Effectively manage time and prioritize tasks; maintain schedule awareness during all phases of design and interact with all departments.
  • Create and maintain a Bill of Materials (BOM) for more than one project.
  • Be an active part of continuous improvement efforts; identify bottlenecks in the Engineering department and propose improvements.
  • Participate in conferences with customers for design reviews and to provide answers as needed.
  • Perform job duties ethically and professionally in alignment with Cryo Works Core Values.
  • Adhere to established deadlines, deliver drawings, specifications, estimation inputs on time and to cost/quality standards.
  • Strictly comply with Cryo Works Standards, customer and code specifications.
  • Maintain design schedules and schedule awareness through interaction with all departments.
  • Ensure design deliverables meet quality, cost, and scheduling expectations.
  • Use critical and analytical thinking; remain customer service oriented and supportive of co-workers.
  • Encourage others, share knowledge, and help train others.
  • These positions do not manage or supervise staff.
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays as business necessitates; schedules will be determined with at least 48‑hour notice.
  • Work environment: professional office setting with moderate noise, controlled temperature; occasional visits to fabrication area with exposure to high or low temperatures and noise.
Qualifications
  • Advanced level skills in Microsoft 365 software and general data entry.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, prioritize work, and handle last-minute demands.
  • Exceptional communication, written, and analytical abilities.
  • Proficient in articulating ideas verbally and in writing to stakeholders, Executive Management, colleagues, customers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Customer service orientated; normal use of critical and analytical thinking.
  • Motivating to co-workers, encouraging others, sharing knowledge, and training others.
  • Willing to explain ideas and reconciling differences with equals.
Education & Experience
  • BSME or degree in a relevant engineering or physics discipline.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and techniques (forming, machining, welding, and inspection/testing) used in fabricated metal parts.
  • Cryogenic, vacuum, and/or pressure equipment fabrication experience.
  • Experience with ASME Code Section VIII, B31.3 Piping Code, Vacuum Vessels and Process Vessels.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and understand GD&T.
  • Competent in use of AutoCAD, Solid Works, Office 365 (Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to present information to Management effectively.
Certifications & Licenses
  • Valid California driver’s license and an insured vehicle in good working order.

  • $26.00 hourly range; salary based on experience.
