Fall, Spring, Summer Sessions as needed. Part-time Lecturer applicant pool. Non-tenure, pending availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. Evening, weekend, distance education, television and or off-campus classes for UH Maui College and or Outreach sites (Lanai and Molokai) may be assigned as part of regular workload. This is NOT a remote position – job requires in-person work.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Under general supervisor, to conduct courses in Hawaiian
  • Maintain minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught
  • Prepare course outlines and reports related to teaching and student progress
  • Work under supervision of department chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area
  • May include instructional assignments involving distance education
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

As listed below. All minimum qualifications must be from an accredited institution and met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available, those not meeting the minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:

  • Master’s Degree in Hawaiian (language or literature)
  • Master’s Degree in Hawaiian as a second language
  • Master’s degree in the study of culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian
  • Master’s degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Successful community college and or university teaching experience in the field
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills in to course content as an integral part of student’s classroom learning activities
  • Knowledge in the appropriate field as evidenced by coursework
  • Prior relevant successful community college or university teaching experience in the field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Native Hawaiian language, history, politics, culture, practices, and contemporary issues
  • Successful community college teaching experience
  • Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students’ classroom learning activities
