  • Part-time Lecturer applicant pool.
  • Non-tenure, pending availability of funds and actual staffing requirements.
  • Evening, weekend, distance education, television and or off-campus classes for UH Maui College and or Outreach sites (Lanai and Molokai) may be assigned as part of regular workload.
  • This is NOT a remote position – job requires in-person work.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision, conduct lectures in Japanese
  • Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught
  • Prepare course outlines and reports related to teaching and student progress
  • Work under supervision of department chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructions in the discipline area
  • Student and peer evaluations and self-assessment of teaching effectiveness are required
  • May include instructional assignments involving distance education
  • Commitment to community college principles and philosophy is essential
  • The college strongly emphasizes the "open door" concept and serves a diverse student and community population
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    • Functionally native oral and written fluency in Japanese, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:
    • Master's Degree in Japanese (language or literature)
    • Master's Degree in Japanese as a second language
    • Master's degree in the study of culture or history of the people who speak Japanese
    • Master's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Japanese literature, Japanese culture, or any combination thereof.

    Qualifications:

  • Knowledge in the appropriate field as evidenced by coursework
  • Prior relevant successful community college or university teaching experience in the field
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Native Hawaiian language, history, politics, culture, practices, and contemporary issues
  • Successful community college teaching experience
  • Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students' classroom learning activities
