Other Conditions: Fall, Spring, Summer Sessions as needed. Non‑tenure, pending availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. Evening, weekend, distance education, television and/or off‑campus classes for UH Maui College and Outreach sites (Lanai and Molokai) may be assigned as part of the regular workload. This is NOT a remote position – job requires in‑person work.
Duties & Responsibilities- Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught
- Prepare course outlines and reports related to teaching and student progress
- Work under supervision of department chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instruction in the discipline area
- Student and peer evaluations and self‑assessment of teaching effectiveness are required
- May include instructional assignments involving distance education
- Commitment to community college principles and philosophy is essential
- The college strongly emphasizes the “open door” concept and serves a diverse student and community population
- Other duties as assigned
Functionally native oral and written fluency in Japanese, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:
- Master’s Degree in Japanese (language or literature)
- Master’s Degree in Japanese as a second language
- Master’s degree in the study of culture or history of the people who speak Japanese
- Master’s degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language; at least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Japanese literature, Japanese culture, or any combination thereof
- Knowledge in the appropriate field as evidenced by coursework
- Prior relevant successful community college or university teaching experience in the field
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Native Hawaiian language, history, politics, culture, practices, and contemporary issues
- Successful community college teaching experience
- Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students’ classroom learning activities
