Job Responsibilities
Curriculum Implementation:
Design and deliver engaging, standards‑based lessons covering major eras in early U.S. History (typically from the Exploration and Colonization periods through the Civil War and Reconstruction).
Critical Thinking Promotion:
Foster historical thinking skills, including chronological reasoning, analyzing primary and secondary sources, and understanding cause‑and‑effect relationships.
Differentiated Instruction:
Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet the diverse needs of 8th‑grade learners, including IEP, 504, ELL, and advanced students.
Civic Literacy:
Guide students in understanding the foundations of American democracy, the U.S. Constitution, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Assessment & Data‑Driven Instruction:
Formative & Summative Grading – Develop, administer, and grade a variety of assessments (quizzes, projects, essays, and exams) to measure student progress accurately;
Data Analysis – Utilize student performance data to identify learning gaps, adjust instructional pacing, and implement targeted interventions;
Timely Feedback – Provide constructive and timely feedback on student work to encourage academic growth and accountability.
Classroom Management & Student Culture:
Positive Environment – Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive, and structured classroom culture rooted in mutual respect and high academic expectations;
Developmental Support – Understand and support the unique social‑emotional and developmental needs of young adolescents;
Behavior Management – Consistently enforce school and classroom policies using proactive and restorative behavior‑management strategies.
Collaboration & Professional Engagement: PLC Participation – Collaborate actively with the Social Studies department and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to align curriculum, share best practices, and analyze student outcomes;
Parent Communication – Maintain open, proactive communication with parents and guardians regarding student academic progress and behavior via email, phone, and parent‑teacher conferences;
School Community – Participate in required staff meetings, professional development days, and school‑wide events during the 10‑month contract period.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in History, Secondary Education, or a related field.
Certification:
Valid State Teaching Certification for Middle School Social Studies / Secondary History (Grade
8).
Experience:
Prior experience teaching middle‑school‑aged students is highly preferred.
Hawaii Teaching License:
Candidates must possess a valid Hawaii teaching license or an Emergency Hire Permit. If hired without completing a Teacher’s Education Program, a maximum of three years is allowed to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license; enrollment in an accepted program is required to continue employment.
Additional Licensing Requirements:
Within each year of employment, instructors are required to demonstrate active pursuit toward meeting Hawaii licensing requirements as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) to maintain employment and eligibility for salary differentials.
