Other Conditions: Fall, Spring, Summer Sessions as needed. Non-tenure, pending availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. Evening, weekend, distance education, television and or off‑campus classes for UH Maui College and or Outreach sites (Lanai and Molokai) may be assigned as part of regular workload. This is NOT a remote position – job requires in‑person work.
Duties & Responsibilities- Conduct courses in Hawaiian under general supervisor
- Maintain minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught
- Prepare course outlines and reports related to teaching and student progress
- Work under supervision of department chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area
- May include instructional assignments involving distance education
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:
- Master’s Degree in Hawaiian (language or literature)
- Master’s Degree in Hawaiian as a second language
- Master’s Degree in the study of culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian
- Master’s Degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with at least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof
Desirable Qualifications
- Successful community college and/or university teaching experience in the field
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of student learning activities
- Knowledge in the appropriate field as evidenced by coursework
- Prior relevant successful community college or university teaching experience in the field
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Native Hawaiian language, history, politics, culture, practices, and contemporary issues
- Successful community college teaching experience
