DESCRIPTION:

The M BD SUBSTATION ENGINEERING Department of the H ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: PROFESSIONAL). This posting seeks to fill at either the Engineer I or Engineer II level; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

Responsibilities (Engineer I)
  • Under direct supervision of higher level professional engineers, perform design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric.
  • Independently evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications.
  • Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require investigation of a limited number of variables. Receive instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features and possible solutions. Assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.

Essential Functions (Engineer I)

  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
  • Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment and makes recommendations.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
  • Understands the Company’s Policies, Mission, Vision, Values, and follows the culture dimensions to ensure the success of the company.
Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. degree in engineering in a discipline relevant to the Department from an accredited engineering school.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering obtained through advanced college-level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of engineering design, project engineering, project management and construction methods for electric utility facilities; typically 3 years’ relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and software applications (spreadsheets, word processing) and ability to learn additional tools.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and Safe Start principles.

Skills

  • Good leadership, written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills to work with all levels of the company, outside contractors, governmental agencies and customers.
  • Flexibility to adapt to a demanding environment and changing priorities.
  • Professionalism in handling confrontational or sensitive issues with tact and discretion.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Hawaii driver’s license.

Experience

  • Experience in design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and related systems; applicable to a specific area of expertise.
