Electrical Engineer I / II (Substation) – Maui
Hawaiian Electric Company seeks an Electrical Engineer (Engineer I or Engineer II) to support capital construction and substation projects on Maui. The role includes design, project engineering, cost estimating, and project management activities under the guidance of senior professional engineers.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering documentation in compliance with codes, ordinances and company standards.
- Conduct project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and compile associated reports.
- Prepare and manage cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material specifications and construction contracts.
- Coordinate work with consulting engineers, evaluate proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment and make recommendations.
- Perform project engineering and project management functions on major capital projects, working with city, county, state and federal agencies.
- Review and review comments on technical reports and studies prepared by others.
- Prepare requests for proposal, evaluate and direct design efforts of consultants, and verify compliance through field inspections.
- Apply organizational policies, mission, vision and values in all activities.
- Participate in emergency response activities as assigned.
Knowledge Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited institution in a discipline relevant to substation and transmission design.
- Thorough knowledge of power engineering design principles, project engineering, project management and construction methods for electric utility facilities.
- Working knowledge of personal computers and related software (spreadsheets, word processing, CAD, etc.) and ability to learn additional tools.
- Knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement and Safe Start principles.
- Knowledge of applicable city, county, state and federal laws, ordinances and regulations.
Skills Requirements
- Effective written, oral and listening communication skills.
- Leadership and interpersonal skills to work with internal teams, contractors, consultants and government agencies.
- Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong analytical and administrative abilities for preparing and monitoring project requirements, resolving cost and time constraints.
- Valid Hawaii driver’s license and compliance with driving position standards.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in design, modifications, upgrades or rearrangements of generation, transmission and substation facilities (Engineer I), or 5–7 years (Engineer II) with a State of Hawaii Professional Engineer license for stamping drawings.
The hiring range is $80,000 – $101,600 for Engineer I and $99,900 – $127,500 for Engineer II. Additional benefits include competitive compensation, health and wellness programs, and career development opportunities.
