Engineer I – Transmission & Distribution Engineering
Job Function:
Under direct supervision of higher‑level professional engineers, the Engineer I performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric.
- Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
- Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned.
- Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
- Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment, and makes recommendations.
- Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.
- Understands the company’s policies, mission, vision, values and follows the culture dimensions.
- A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant engineering experience in design, project engineering, project management, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities.
- Working knowledge of personal computers and productivity software.
- Knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and Safe Start principles.
- Effective written, oral and listening communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
- Professional handling of confrontational or sensitive issues with tact and discretion.
- In‑depth analytical and administrative skills for managing project requirements and resolving cost/time constraints.
- Must have, or be able to qualify for, a State of Hawaii driver’s license.
- Experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades, and rearrangements of electric utility facilities such as generation, transmission, substation, and communication/control systems.
Job Function:
Performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
- Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design work in accordance with company standards, applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Performs project engineering and project management functions on major capital projects.
- Works with city, county, state, and federal agencies on rules, regulations and permits regarding projects.
- Conducts engineering studies, prepares reports, and reviews comments on technical reports and studies prepared by others.
- Prepares requests for proposal for engineering services, evaluates proposals, makes recommendations, directs design efforts by consultants, and checks designs prepared by consultants.
- Prepares material, equipment construction specifications for bids and evaluates proposals for purchase.
- Develops project schedules and cost estimates for inclusion in the capital budget.
- Conducts field inspections to verify field conditions, check compliance with specifications, and prepares reports of findings.
- Understands the company’s policies, mission, vision, values and follows the culture dimensions.
- Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited engineering school in a discipline relevant to the department.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience in power engineering design, project engineering, project management, design standards, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities.
