Senior Backend Software Engineer

AEP Hawaii is hiring a remote Senior-Staff Level Software Engineer with distributed systems experience for a unicorn SaaS startup.

Compensation: $180,000–$320,000 + equity

We’re looking for a senior distributed systems engineer to work on the core backend systems that power high‑throughput, high‑reliability data movement. This is a high‑ownership role with real architectural influence and minimal process overhead.

• 5+ years of experience building backend or distributed systems
• Strong fundamentals in system design, performance optimization, and reliability
• Experience operating systems at scale (data pipelines, infrastructure, platforms, or similar)
• Comfort working in high‑autonomy environments with significant ownership
• Clear communication and pragmatic engineering judgment

• Designing and scaling distributed systems that handle large volumes of data reliably and efficiently
• Improving performance across batch and real‑time data pipelines
• Building systems that operate across multiple cloud providers and regions
• Identifying and eliminating bottlenecks as the platform scales to the next order of magnitude
• Owning projects end to end, from design through production and iteration
